Whats going on At Impact???
med ball training
Medicine balls are a great way to increase power and explosion while reducing the risk of injury at the same time. At Impact we are always looking for innovative ways to improve our athletes overall power in the safest and healthiest ways possible. Ross was fortunate enough to be introduced to the medicine ball workouts by Mike Guadango of Freak Strength. The movements of the exercises preformed with the medicine ball correlate directly to Olympic lifts originally geared toward explosion. Medicine ball workouts also translate to the movements athletes make on the field much better than traditional bar workouts. Medicine balls are also significantly less stressful on the joints of athletes, helping to prevent injury.
This winter for an 8 week period we tested the medicine ball theory. We had our athletes working strictly with medicine balls in place of power lifts such as hang cleans and snatches. The athletes preformed exercises like the backwards overhead medicine ball throw, explosive chest passes, and medicine ball knee jumps. After the 8 week period the results spoke for themselves. Every one of our athletes saw at least a 10 lb increase in their max hang clean along with increased explosion, flexibility, and stability. One of our athletes who has committed to play football at UMass Amherst, Joe Tyo, saw his hang clean jump up 20 lbs, while DY high school's running back Michael Dunn added 1.5 inches in his vertical jump. Other athletes saw improvements in their broad jump and core strength. Working with medicine balls is a great way to improve your explosiveness without straining your body.
